How We Live Pure

The responsibility of living righteously is a subject requiring some explanation. It is difficult for some to wrap their mind around how we can live Godly lives while still carrying the sin nature. Wouldn’t it be hypocrisy to receive forgiveness while continuing to sin? This question is understandable and worth taking time to discuss.

In the scripture, Paul dedicates entire sections to balancing forgiveness and living righteously. One of the most quoted lines from the book of Romans is where is says

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may increase? God forbid! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Romans 6:1-2

Obviously we should conclude that a continuation of sinful living should not be the aftermath of receiving forgiveness. So what does it mean when we say that we are bound to sin even though we should not live before sin? What must be understood about this concept is that it is a matter of the hearts condition. Paul appeals to the Romans in the 12th chapter shedding light on what it means not to live before sin.

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service of worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2

Notice how Paul does not suggest that our minds have been completely renewed. Instead, he suggests that by yielding our lives to the spirit of God, our minds are in a state of renewal. This means that the process of becoming spiritually minded is a matter of being matured. God shapes us even though we are still bound to stumble.

What must be understood about the Christian walk is that we are not working to become perfect. God is working in us to be used for His glory. As long as we are in these bodies, we will continually be susceptible to the temptations of this world. It is not a matter of becoming sinless, but making our daily passion for the one who is sinless. Without Christ, there is not even a hope of overcoming the slightest of temptations. With Him, we learn to depend on His grace to help us overcome the power of sin.
